How do I register my child for NHS dental care at Riverside Dental Practice?

To register your child, simply contact our reception team by phone or visit our practice in person. We will schedule an initial appointment and get your child set up for their ongoing dental care with us.

At what age should my child start visiting the dentist?

We recommend bringing your child for their first dental visit as soon as their first tooth comes through, or by their first birthday. Early visits help to familiarise your child with the dentist and allow us to monitor their oral health from the start.

Are children's dental treatments free under the NHS?

Yes, NHS dental care is free for all children under the age of 18. This includes all preventive and necessary treatments.

How often should my child visit the dentist?

Children should visit the dentist at least every 6 months for routine check-ups. However, the dentist may recommend more frequent visits based on your child's individual needs and oral health.

What can I do to help prevent tooth decay in my child?

We encourage regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste, reducing sugary snacks and drinks, and maintaining routine dental visits. At Riverside Dental Practice, we offer advice on healthy dietary habits and preventive treatments like fluoride applications and fissure sealants to protect your child's teeth.

What if my child is anxious about visiting the dentist?

We understand that some children may feel nervous about dental visits. Our friendly and experienced team works hard to create a welcoming and comfortable environment. We take time to explain treatments and ensure your child feels relaxed during their appointment.

What happens if my child needs more complex treatment?

If your child requires specialist care beyond routine treatments, such as orthodontic referrals or complex extractions, we will guide you through the process and refer your child to the appropriate NHS specialist services.

What should I do if my child has a dental emergency?

In case of a dental emergency, such as a severe toothache, injury, or swelling, contact us as soon as possible. We offer emergency appointments for children and will provide the necessary treatment to relieve pain and address the issue.

What if I need to cancel or change an appointment?

It is inevitable that sometimes you may need to cancel or rearrange your dental appointments.

We would ask patients to give a minimum of 24 hours notice when cancelling an appointment so we have the opportunity to offer it to someone else, although we do understand that during an emergency this is not always possible.

If two NHS dental appointments are missed or cancelled with less than 24 hour’s notice, we will not offer NHS treatment in the future. This means that you will have to find an alternative NHS dentist for future treatment and check-ups, or continue with us on a private basis.

If you have any further questions or would like to schedule an appointment for your child, please email [email protected] or call 01451 820 306.
